CDs worth the Cheese ($)
Whenever we’ve had the privilege to engage parents in a discussion on hip-hop at our church or elsewhere, without fail, they ask about what to buy and where. It’s been encouraging to see them buy whatever it is we’ve had at any particular time be it, the Mad Prophets, The Yuinon EP, or Corey Red and Precise. Many of these parents are fans of hip-hop and for some, it’s not their cup of tea, (some of their teens too) but they’re eager to support this movement. So it is with those parents and teens in mind that we provide this list of CDs, worth the cheese.

*Note, this is not a chart, and the numbering is completely arbitrary. It will be updated regularly. Some of the CDs are not necessarily new, but are still worthy purchases for your growing collection of urban contemporary gospel. For the record, we know yall already know about Kirk, Fred, Donnie, CeCe and Yolanda, so you won’t see those artists (whom we love too) listed here.

Sizzerp
The origins of our Parental Advisory section is from a “presentation” we did during hip hop month in October of 2001. Maji explained to the congregation what the “sizzerp” the rap group Three 6 Mafia were boasting about. On June 13, 2000, Three 6 Mafia released a song called, “Sippin on some Syrup” or commonly known a “Sizzerp” Without doing any research on what Sizzerp was, radio put it in rotation. Not knowing that the song they were promoting was a potential deadly drink! There are many ways to create Syzrup. The most popular is Nyquil, crushed exstacy with liquor. The response was incredible and confirmed what we suspected. Parents need HELP in dealing with teens and preteens who listen to and are influenced by hip-hop. Before you know it, the catchy songs and hooks (thanks to a major assist by greedy and monolithic radio stations), are in their subconscious and they’re walking around repeating phrases that glamorize and promote spiritual apathy and self-destruction.

So, parents as best as we can, let us advise you. Email us help@theyuinon.com with your questions, comments, challenges, testimonies, and prayer requests relating to rearing a child immersed in and influenced by hip-hop. We will do our best to promptly post a reply within 24 hours. You may remain anonymous. We have several Yuinon members, with children who grew up with hip-hop as well as pastors with wisdom from years of ministry and of course God’s word itself as our authority and source for clarity, and correction.

The African proverb that states; it takes a village to raise a child is in danger of becoming a cliché. The Yuinon recognizes that for many parents, hip-hop is the new house in the village. Our goal is to help you understand her, even as we clean her many filthy rooms to help her become a godly member of the village.
